Tips for Poshmark Success

Poshmark is a great website to clean out your closet while making some cash. It is also a great place to refresh your wardrobe by buying resold clothing! This is both good for the environment and good for your wallet. The more we reuse and resell our clothing, the fewer clothes go into a landfill. Because of the wide appeal, there are more and more people looking for tips for Poshmark success!

I just recently became a Posh Ambassador! Check out my closet here.

Some people have turned reselling on Poshmark into a full-time business. While I’m not quite there yet, here are some of my tips for Poshmark success.

Have shipping supplies ready before your first sale.

The US Postal Service will send you free shipping supplies right to your door. It’s very simple to order the products online or you can go to your local post office and pick up supplies.

Poshmark exclusively uses USPS Priority Mail for shipping and your items will ship between 1-3 days depending on how far the buyer lives from you.

Poshmark provides a flat rate fee of $7.11 for expedited shipping for all orders. Each order is shipped using 1-3 day USPS Priority Mail. Shipping is paid for by the buyer. Multiple items from one seller can be added to the order for the same fee as long as the total weight of the order does not exceed 5 lbs.

Be sure to order the right type of mailing supplies. I have both boxes and padded envelopes on hand for both large and small orders. I find that these Padded Envelopes are easy to store and work best for shipping most clothing items. And, I always have at least 3 rolls of packing tape lying around my house.

Have stationary to send a handwritten thank you. While it is not necessary, Poshmark has created a culture of cute wrapping and handwritten thank you notes. Sometimes, this practice is debated amongst the Poshmark community… when you order from Amazon you don’t receive a handwritten thank you or free presents. But, when you do shop from a small business there is an expected level of thoughtfulness. I’ll let you decide what you feel is appropriate for your customers but I always include a personalized, handwritten, thank you card in every package I send out.

Use Ziplock or plastic bags to protect the item you send. This is also a debated topic in the Poshmark community. Some people trust the United States Postal Service with their products and others do not… Again, I’ll leave this up to you BUT imagine waiting for your new item only to find it sitting in a cardboard box in a puddle on your front porch… without any other form of protection between the elements and your cute new dress.

Tissue paper and/or small gifts. When I first got into Poshmark I loved wrapping up my items beautifully in sparkly tissue paper and throwing a little extra present from the dollar store in the box for my buyer. THIS IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL! If you do want to go the extra mile, here are my tips:

  • Do not use colored tissue paper. If your shipment gets wet during transit, the colors from the tissue paper will bleed onto the item.
  • Include practical gifts. Most people have said that if they receive a gift with their purchase, they throw it away. Most people do not need more junk in their house. If you do send anything additional, make it useful and practical (mini lint rollers, to-go packs of tissues, etc.)

Take multiple photos of the item you are selling.

The best photos for Poshmark are well-lit, clear, and attractive. If you cannot find a space to take a photo of your item without a distracting background, try a background removing app. I use PhotoRoom!

I have found that photos of you wearing the item perform well. If you don’t provide photos of someone wearing the item you may receive comments asking to “model” it. If you don’t feel comfortable modeling the item, try getting a mannequin or use stock photos.

The use of stock photos is prohibited on Poshmark. You cannot use stock photos without the consent of the company that produced the images. That being said, stock photos are sometimes necessary to fully convey the item you are selling. If you do use a stock photo, convey in your description that the photos are not of the actual item that you are selling.

If the item has any flaws, be sure to take photos. It is better to be open and honest before receiving questions or criticism. Hiding flaws will only lead to a diminished reputation as a seller.

Be active and share often!

Poshmark is a social media platform built around buying and selling. Because of this, it is essential to be social! Follow as many people as possible, share your listings, and share other people’s listings.

A simple rule to follow: if someone shares your listing, share two of their listings back. This will help you build an active community of followers on the site and get your listings out to more eyes!

Another way to generate activity is to join Share Groups on Facebook. Share Groups are fun ways to get fast activity on your profile while also finding a community of active Poshers.

This is the group I’m in: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1274068759290173/

Happy Poshing!
